Adesanya becomes UFC Middleweight Champion

source

Interim middleweight (185 lbs) champ Israel “The Last Stylebender” Adesanya (18-0) became the UFC undisputed middleweight champion by knocking out Robert Whittaker with 1:28 remaining in the second round at the Marvel Arena in Melbourne, Australia.

The key to Adesanya’s victory was the ability to set up counters off of Whittaker’s aggression.  Every time that Whittaker rushed forward, Adesanya would step to the side and throw counters at an angle.  The plan worked because Adesanya knocked Whittaker down at the end of the first round, but Whittaker was saved by the bell.

In the final exchange, Whittaker charged right down the middle with a one-two combination.  However, Adesanya countered with a three-punch combo that put Whittaker down again in the second round.

    • Adesanya said that he wants to fight Jones in 2021. If they meet, Adesanya would have the striking advantage since he had over 70 pro kickboxing fights. Jones would have the advantage in strength and in wrestling. It could go either way, but Adesanya has to get past Costa in his next fight.
