2019 NFL Draft Review – Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys are looking to repeat as the NFC East Division champions this season.  Will this draft be the catalyst for another run in the NFL Playoffs?  Let’s take a look at their picks.

Round 2, Pick 26:  Trysten Hill, DT, Central Florida.  6’3″, 308 lbs.  Hill was a solid contributor to the defensive line for UCF over the past couple of seasons.  His draft stock dropped because he did not start last season after being a solid starter during his junior season.  Hopefully, he will be motivated to compete for being in the defensive line rotation this upcoming season.

Round 3, Pick 26:  Connor McGovern, OG, Penn State.  6’5″, 308 lbs.  McGovern could compete for a starting spot on the interior even though Dallas has one of the best offensive lines in the NFL.

Round 4, Pick 26:  Tony Pollard, RB, Memphis.  6’0″, 210 lbs.  Pollard will compete to be the third down back due to his versatility as a receiver.  He may also vie for a spot as a kick returner as well.  Special teams for the Cowboys definitely needs an upgrade, so grabbing Pollard is a solid pick.

Round 5, Pick 20:  Michael Jackson, CB, Miami (FL).  6’1″, 210 lbs.  If you watched any Miami games over the past couple of years, then you saw this guy wearing the “Turnover Chain” from time to time.  Jackson is a game-changer as he always looks to make plays.  His style of play is sort of risky, which is why he dropped to the fifth round.  However, he will be a better pro because he is way better playing press on a receiver rather than in zone coverage.

Round 5, Pick 27:  Joe Jackson, DE, Miami (FL).  6’4″, 275 lbs.  I guess the Cowboys liked watching Miami’s defense on tape because they drafted both Jacksons on the team.  Joe Jackson will fight for a spot in the defensive end rotation.

Round 6, Pick 40:  Donovan Wilson, S, Texas A&M.  6’0″, 199 lbs.  Wilson will look to develop as a backup safety based upon his size in the defensive backfield.

Round 7, Pick 4:  Mike Weber, RB, Ohio State.  5’10”, 211 lbs.  Weber will also vie for being the 3rd down back as well due to his pass-receiving skills.  He is a steal at this spot.

Round 7, Pick 27:  Jalen Jelks, DE, Oregon.  6’5″, 256 lbs.  Jelks will also add to the defensive line rotation as a pass-rusher.

Grade:  Upgrading the depth on both sides of the ball is critical as the Cowboys will be playing a tougher schedule this season.  They could have drafted another wide receiver, but they chose not to go that route.  This draft is rather solid; I give them a B- because they were able to draft a few players that went way later than expected.
