2019 NBA Draft Review: Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics are once again in a state of flux after the organization chose not to re-sign PG Kyrie Irving and PF Al Horford.  Adding PG Kemba Walker definitely helps, but the Celtics really need more players in order to maintain their status as a playoff contender in the NBA Eastern Conference.  Fortunately, Boston had plenty of draft picks that were used to bolster the team for next season.  Here is a look at their draft picks.

14. Romeo Langford, SG, Indiana.  6’4″, 215 lbs.  (16.5 ppg, 5.4 rpg).  The Celtics lack isolation players on their roster.  Adding Langford will help to fill that void.  He will definitely grab some minutes off of the bench at shooting guard as he will look to develop his efficiency as a pro.

22. Grant Williams, PF, Tennessee.  6’6″, 240 lbs.  (18.8 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 3.2 apg).  Williams is very versatile for his size.  He can score in the post off of the block or on pick-and-roll and pick-and-pop plays with his outside shot.  He will see minutes off of the bench at power forward or possibly even at center in small lineups.

33. Carsen Edwards, PG, Purdue.  6’1″, 199 lbs.  (24.3 ppg, 1.3 spg).  Edwards is a volume shooter who will be perfect coming off of the bench to back up Kemba Walker at point guard or to put him at shooting guard when Boston needs buckets quickly.  He can score points in bunches as witnessed by Purdue’s run to the Elite Eight in this past NCAA Tournament.  He is a one-man scoring run waiting to happen.

51. Tremont Waters, PG, LSU.  5’11”, 172 lbs.  (15.3 ppg, 5.8 apg, 2.8 spg).  Waters is an absolute steal at #51 in the draft.  He dropped to the second round due to his height, but he has proven that he can run the show with his tenacity and with his on-the-ball defending.

Grade:  With these picks, the Celtics have the necessary depth to make another run for the playoffs.  I give them an A-.
