The fir trees are distinguished from other members of the pine family by their needle-like leaves that are attached to the branch by a foot that resembles a small suction cup and by its fruits: cylindrical cones between 5 and 25 cm long , Compact, with scales or bracts, which stand erect on the branches, grouped near the top. At maturity, these cones do not detach themselves from the spruce like pine cones, but in this case they decompose releasing the pine nuts.

The identification of the species is based on the size and arrangement of the leaves, the size and shape of the cones and whether the bracts are long and extended or short and hidden inside the cone.
