Six Native Birds

Just a selection of 6 native New Zealand Birds.

At different stages and at different places.

Each type has a unique personality and yet even amongst their own, their own self. All of them have their own place, their own mate and their own ways.

#1 New Zealand Kingfisher

The Kingfisher has a distinctive sound. They eat small insects and bugs.

#2 New Zealand Tui

This bird is an excellent singer, songster. They eat little bugs nectar from flowers and sugar water.

They like to be heard not seen. They move quickly and when they fly they sound like a puffing bellow.

In different places their tunes are different.

#3 The New Zealand Pukako

They eat around the grass roots and probably eat small bugs in the ground.

#4 Grey Warbler

This is my first and only sighting. They often are heard and not seen. They make a lovely tuneful sound.

#5 White Eye

I was watching White eyes at Piha and there was a few in this New Zealand native tree. These often go in flocks. I hardly ever hear them.

Like the Tui, they love nectar and sugar water, they love fat.

#6 These are Fantails

These birds are lovely and fly like flicking helicopters. They are often not far away from you and peer at you from their bright brown eyes. They make little pipping sounds and pick insects out of the air.

I love listening to birds songs. They are every day with me. Within 5 meters of the mythic bedroom there is a park and trees full of birds

Love these shots. Its awesome to see the different birds you have. So unlike ours, except for the warbler, we have those. Thanks for the tour. The pakako, is it like a chicken, or quail? I love the color.

  Thanks Kim. The pukako is like a Swamp Hen and is of a similar size. It is definitely too tough to be a quail.
