Saturday Critters – Bombylius major

It is Saturday! Time for new critters. What a critter can be? An animal, a bird, an insect, a reptile …. Let’s see all the critters in the world.

Known as Bee Fly, Bombylius major it’s neither fly nor bee! It is something between the two species. It has a hairy body and  a long rigid proboscis in comparison with the body.  Bombylius major can be seen visiting and foraging nectar from flowers

The bee fly is a parasite of solitary bees, wasps and beetles. That means  it lays  its eggs into or near the nests of the host insects. The larvae enter inside the host’s nest and eats the food stored, as well as the young solitary bees or wasps
