Pink lake

A lake that resembles big strawberries is still one of the magnificent wonders nature has honored us! Except as a tourist attraction, it is also known for being the ultimate point of the Dakar Rally! Lake Retba or Lac Rose is located on the Green Cape peninsula about 35 kilometers northeast of Dakar, the capital of Senegal. Depending on the age of the day, the colors of the lake change from light to crimson pink! The unusual color of the water originates from the red pigment of the algae Dunaliella salina that can survive in a particularly salty environment, and the pink color is particularly pronounced during the dry season of the year.

The lake spans about 3 square kilometers, its average depth is about 1.5 meters, and under the water is a salty bark of almost equal thickness! The local inhabitants of the lake daily scraping the bottom of the salt, and then the valuable mineral wood canoes transported to the shores of the lake. Such white piles of salt that dries around the lake further highlight the pink color of the lake! Interesting is the fact that Lake Retba contains about 40% salt and because of the high density of water in this lake it is extremely easy to float, just like in the Dead Sea! Salt collectors will put shea butter in order to protect themselves from extreme salinity.
