I visited again our beautiful city of Kranj and this old city core. I like to take a walk around the old city center and see its sights. A few days ago, I again looked at the castle of Khislstein. The castle stands in the middle of the city core of Kranj, where it was a fortified area from the Ancient period to the early Middle Ages. There was walled walls 1500 years ago.
The castle was built between the 15th and 19th centuries, and today’s image was given to the castle in the 17th century. The south-eastern part of the castle was built during the Turkish invasions. In 1578, the owner rebuilt the castle in a noble mansion. The owners of the castle included Mosconi, Counts Barbo and Auerspergi.
In 1913, the castle became a municipal property. By 2008, the Gorenjski Museum had administrative offices in Khislstein, and then the owner of the castle, the Municipality of Kranj, began with the renovation with the help of European funds. The renovated premises of the Khislstein castle are dedicated to the new permanent exhibition Wonderful Gorenjska, which takes visitors to the main turning points of life in the Gorenjska region, from the early Middle Ages to the present.
