New Zealand Takahe

This is a New Zealand Takahe, a very rare and endangered bird. It looks like a Pukako but it isn’t. It’s a stocky build and there is different colours on the back.

Unlike the Pukako, it can not fly at all. Takahe birds has more colours than Pukakos. They come from the South Island and are used to cold, wet and damp weather. They live in alpine environments. They are at risk from introduced predators, rats, mice, stoats, cats, dogs. Their numbers got so low that there was only 4 of them left. So now they are on bird sanctuaries such as Tiritiri Matangi Island and other places. I took my photo of this bird on Tiritiri Matangi Island
