I was excited to find this dragonfly in the garden since they have been quite scarce in recent years. Loss of wetlands is a threat to the dragonfly population worldwide.
Dragonflies are interesting insects having evolved about 300 million years ago when they had a wingspan of up to 24 inches. Modern day dragonflies have much smaller wingspans but they are expert fliers and are able to fly in 6 different directions
Dragonflies are efficient hunters and a great asset for controlling the mosquito population as they can eat hundreds of mosquitoes a day. During the larval stage they are aquatic and can even eat fish and tadpoles.

It is a sad situation. We had so many but I see none these days
So true, that is why I was so excited to see one.
This insect is rarely found
Growing up I used to see them a lot but now are quite scarce
Fantastic shot. I rarely see this insect.
Thank you. They are quite scarce these days
I love these dragonflies but rarely see them here. Thanks for the information.
Yes I don’t see much of them these days so it was nice to see this one
