Electricity from waterfalls

It was in the province of Baler, Philippines where I saw a hydroelectric plant that generates electricity to some towns in the province. The water comes from a giant waterfall that cascades from a high mountain. There was a big iron pipe connected to the  exit point of the water from the falls that goes straight down to the hydroelectric plant. It is easy to understand the scientific part when you see the system that running water can give electricity. Maybe the government should encourage schools for a field trip to such hydroelectric plants.
