The typical natural form has blue flowers, but the breeders have been cultivated varieties with white, pink and blue flowers. There are dwarf and terry varieties.

Buds are like balls, so in English the plant is called a balloon flower – a “flower-ball”.

According to the Japanese tradition, the bell is one of the seven primary colors (grasses) of autumn, all together, these flowers are a symbol of autumn solitude, casting sadness, and means unchangeable love and regret.
