Bird of the Day – The Ruru or Morepork

Here is our New Zealand Owl equivalent, the Ruru or Morepork. It is resting in a tree on Tiritiri Matangi Island.

Morepork is the sound it makes at night. when it flies it is silent, I saw my first Morepork in Rotorua at night. It moved its wings and made no sound at all. It is a predator.

What do you think?

  1. Since owls have extraordinary night vision, it is often thought that they are blind in strong light. This is not true, because their pupils have a wide range of adjustment, allowing the right amount of light to strike the retina. Some species of owls can actually see better than humans in bright light

  2. This is the cutest serious faced owl I have seen in a while. We also have owls (which have the tufts of plumage above their eyes) and also “chouettes” which do not have the tufts of feathers above the eyes. Unfortunately I do not know the translation word for “chouettes”. But I think both of them are called owls in english. I especially like our own North America and Northern Europe’s Snowy owls.
