Solar power is easy to harness and convert into usable electricity. However, this is effective only while the sun is out and the panels have unobstructed exposure to direct sunlight. Thus, on cloudy days and at night, your solar system would be ineffective unless it were connected to a battery that can save excess electricity generated during the day. Solar battery price is dependent on many factors. The most important amongst them are:

Capacity & power

The amount of electricity a solar battery can store is known as its capacity. This is typically measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). Solar batteries for home are designed to be stackable, i.e. multiple batteries can be connected to the same inverter to increase the storage capacity. However, this is not all you need to be concerned about. You will also need to look at the battery’s power rating. This is defined as the amount of electricity a battery delivers at any one particular point of time. A battery with a low power rating and a high capacity can deliver enough electricity to run your critical appliances for a long period of time. On the other hand, a battery with a high power rating and low capacity can run all the lights , fans and appliances you need but for a considerably shorter time period.

Depth of discharge (DoD)

Based on their chemical composition, almost all solar batteries retain a certain amount of charge at all times. If you empty out the battery’s charge completely, its lifespan will be considerably reduced.  A battery’s depth of discharge (DoD) refers to the battery’s capacity that can be used without affecting its lifespan. Most manufacturers specify a maximum DoD. For example, if a 10kWh battery’s DoD is defined as 80%, it means that you should not let the battery’s charge drop lower than 8 kWh. As the battery’s DoD increases, so does the usable capacity and solar battery price.

Round-trip efficiency

This refers to the percentage of usable energy stored in the battery. For example, say you have a 10 kWh battery. When fully charged, you can get 8 kWh of useful electricity. This means that your battery has a 80 percent round-trip efficiency. The higher the round-trip efficiency, the more value you will get for your money.

Battery life & warranty

A solar battery will typically charge and discharge every day. As you use the battery, the amount of charge it can hold will gradually reduce. Thus, solar batteries are comparable to all other kinds of batteries. Most solar battery manufacturers will guarantee a certain lifespan. This refers to the number of charge and discharge cycles it ca function optimally for. For example, a battery may hold a warranty for 10 years or 5000 cycles at 75% of the original capacity. This implies that after 10 years, the battery will have lost no more than 25% of its original energy holding capability.

In addition to all of these factors, the branding of the battery also affects solar battery price. Unbranded batteries are available but these batteries have no warranty and hence are unreliable.
