Every September as the term started, Prof. Pool would begin his shortlisting. By early October he would have narrowed the field to five or six potentials.
Then begin his program.
The point was to have a woman who would spend Xmas with him. This Autumn Miss, would be in his bed before All Hallow’s Eve, sort of a test run. If there was a problem, he had a few weeks to alter his choice.Two weeks before Christmas Prof. Pool’s wife and children would be dispatched to visit her mother in New York. He would tell Miss Autumn that he was shipping them away. They would be gone somewhere between the 10th and 14th of December, and not return until somewhere between the 3rd and 5th of January.
Prof Pool would send the gardener home a day or so after she left, and not need to report until January 3rd. He would send home the helper at about the same time for the same period.
This would allow him and Miss Autumn to have a three week ‘honeymoon’.
It was not that Prof Pool brought Miss Autumn to his home, he just didn’t want anyone reporting on the fact that he would be home.
That was another sure fire way of avoiding the Prof; make it clear from day one you were going home for Christmas.
