What Does Climate Change Really Mean?

In the 1960s and 1970s, the hysteria was in regard to catastrophic global cooling. Popular opinion was that we were on the brink of a new ice age and the evidence was strong. In the 1980s and 1990s, the big worry became catastrophic global warming. Now, we have “climate change”. What does it mean?

The truth is that the ‘global warming’ worry used the same data that the global cooling concern used. People might remember the many doomsday predictions that have come and gone over just the past few decades. Many of those had to do with the climate.

People might wonder why we are now inundated by ‘climate change’ instead of global warming. The name was changed because global warming was unsupported by true science. Real science is based on empirical data, not suppositions and guesses.

One thing is for sure; the climate is changing. Whether it is getting hotter or colder or remaining relatively the same, our world is dynamic. It is constantly changing. We can see this through pure observation.

The climate is also changing. It must change since the weather isn’t the same from one day to the next. Climate is the average of weather over the past century and since the weather is continually changing, the climate must also change. Regardless if people believe we are set for another ice age or that the world will soon be too hot to support life, most people acknowledge the fact that the climate is changing.

Catastrophic global warming was renamed ‘climate change’ for that reason. Most people can agree that the climate is changing. It has changed throughout the history of our planet and since long before man was created. In fact, it fluctuated far more before man arrived on the scene than it has since. The name change was primarily an attempt to salvage the catastrophic global warming theories.

You might wonder if the world is actually warming up. The answer is yes, and that is a good thing for mankind. It has been warming, according to the best data that is available, for at least 11,000 years. if it wasn’t, most of the northern hemisphere would still be under a mile and a half of ice. Has it been catastrophic? Anything but catastrophic. Repeatedly, the doomsday scenarios have flopped. So have visions of a new ice age.

The climate is changing. It always has and always will, as long as there is a climate. When you get right down to it, that is exactly what ‘climate change’ means. Pray that it will continue to change. If it doesn’t, there will be no atmosphere and that pretty well signals the end of life on this planet.

  1. I won’t waste your time.

The average temperature of the largest mass on the planet has risen more in the past 20 years than it has ever risen before. The rate of melting at the North and South Poles will displace 375 million people in the next 15 years.

5 of the top 5 hottest years on record, were last 5 years. 2 of the wettest years ever recorded were in the last 2 years.
    Hot makes crops wither
Water (too much) makes the ground unstable for roots (wet)

While I do agree with your supposition, that climate always changes that isn’t what climate change really means.

It is not about the country over century trends.

Based on historical records, and a number of scientific projects there have been more than 24 hundred year weather events in the past five years. Just to be clear that is roughly well 9 times what that should be at best.

It is not that climate change happens, it does. It is cyclical and has been for thousands of years. The issue that scientists have repeatably stated with facts is that the rate of change is greater than anything they have been able to measure in the past 10,000 or so years.

    • I haven’t specifically heard the 36-year figure, but we do know that there are a number of cycles and some of them are tremendously long. There is little doubt that there are many more that we don’t know about. We also know that a great number of things affect the climate, often in very complex ways.

The truth is that we barely have an idea of how climate changes and why. Our level of understanding is comparable to the amount an ant knows about the workings of the space shuttle.

  2. It is warming. We have never had 40 degrees of Celcius here, but yesterday and today we had it for the first time. In summers, we even did not need any air conditioners, we simply did not need them, and now people started buying them.

    • It sounds like a weather trend. It still isn’t the climate. In the last decade, more cold and snow records fell in the US than hot weather records, That still isn’t the climate, it is a weather trend. It most definitely isn’t global since some places have been colder than normal, some have been close to normal, and others have been hotter than normal. The net change, globally, would be very close to zero and it is still weather rather than climate.
