Walnut Tree Sills

This picture was taken at Historic Poplar Grove in Onancock, Virginia. Many years of shoddy “upgrade” work, including adding indoor plumbing and bathrooms, led to this hole in the kitchen floor where an air conditioning duct had been run. I was surprised to find after removing the duct, that the original center sill of the house was literally a whole walnut log, with only the top leveled off, and the bottom only notched around the brick piers is was placed upon. I will have many more photos and articles coming about this wonderful colonial home, as it is a constant work in progress.

  1. We are lucky to live in an area that Black Walnut trees grow everywhere. I have baskets full of them behind the shed now drying out for husking, and later shelling.
