There’s a tone of voice people use whent hey are empty of sentiment. A tone that doesn’t rise to contempt and borders indifference.

There is no anger, no sorrow, no regret or depth.

When Kelly spoke to me that was his voice. Empty. It wasn’t pretense nor enforced. Whatever love he might have had for me, that was gone.

He’d made a choice.

I imagine him sitting and considering,logically deciding he was not ready nor desirous of fostering a child. If it was a choice of being with me alone, yes. If it was being with me and Owen, no.

There was no maybe, there was no if/when. I decided I wanted to foster Owen, he decided he wanted no part of that, and by association, no part of me.
