Rereading Nineteen Eighty Four – Part III Chap 3 -(4)

Winston, questioned by O’Brien offers his explanation as to why the State controls;

‘You are ruling over us for our own good. You believe…human beings are not fit to govern themselves, and therefore –‘

Winston is suddenly shocked.  The pain shoots through his body and when it subsides; O’Brien says;.

‘That was stupid, Winston, stupid!’ he said, then states;  ” The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power.”

This honesty is shocking.   It is shocking in the Book and in real life, for this the truth.

” Not wealth or luxury or long life or happiness: only power, pure power… We are different from all the oligarchies of the past… All the others… were hypocrites.”

———-

Reading this revelation removes the scales from one’s eyes.  Those who pursue power do it for its own sake.   This can be easily seen in American reality today, where no one cares about the people, only getting power to have it, to extend it, to gain material value.
