“Room 101” said the officer.
In the Book, this room is often mentioned and creates absolute terror.
Here we have a starving man, a man who is dying. A man who was offered a piece of bread by another prisoner. The starving man’s brain is so controlled that he refuses the bread.
Now, being taken to Room 101 the starving man turns on the one who offered him the bread. The one who suffered traumatic injury for doing so.
The Starving Man tries to convince the guards that the man who offered him the bread was speaking against the Party.
When that didn’t work, the starving man grabbed onto the iron legs that supported a bench and had to be pried off, his hand broken in the process.
The other prisoners sat unmoving, just as expected as the man was taken to Room 101.
