Rereading Nineteen Eighty Four – Part II Chap 9 (18

In 1984, science has virtually ceased to exist save in the search for new weapons.

In Newspeak, the language of 1984 there is no word for ‘Science’.

Empirical thought, on which all the scientific achievements  were founded, is opposed to the most fundamental principles of Ingsoc.

Goldstein’s Book indicates that technological progress only happens when its products can be used for the diminution of human liberty.

In war and police espionage  the empirical approach is still encouraged, but nowhere else.

The two aims of the Party are to conquer the whole surface of the earth and to extinguish once and for all the possibility of independent thought.

The quest is how to discover what another human being is thinking, and how to kill several hundred million people in a few seconds without giving warning.
