Northbound Freight Heading Out of Chicago (3 photos)

22 Apr 2018

Yesterday I went out photographing trains with a friend of mine. We spent some time at the Edgebrook Metra Station on the northwest side of Chicago, Illinois. Metra is a commuter railroad but freight trains are not uncommon on this route (Milwaukee District North). We were fortunate enough to catch this one just before we had to leave to pick up our wives who were eating breakfast at a local restaurant.

The locomotive is Canadian Pacific #9801, a GE AC44CW built in April of 2004. It was pulling a combination of tank cars and double-stacked intermodal flat cars. There was a second locomotive in the middle of the train which I was not able to photograph.

All three photographs were taken using a Nikon Coolpix P7700 camera and were edited using Luminar 2018. Specifics follow each photo.

Nothbound CP #9801 (2018-04-21 12-38-43a)

I cropped the image to get rid of some of the foreground and used the RAW Develop filter to lower the highlights and boost the contrast, shadows and clarity. Then I used the Tone filter to lower the SmartTone and apply the Accent-AI, Polarizing and Top & Bottom Lighting filters. Lastly I used the Advanced Contrast filters to increase the contrast in the highlights and midtones and the Brilliance/Warmth filter to increase both.

Tank Cars (2018-04-21 12-40-25a)

I used the RAW Develop filter to raise the contrast and clarity and lower the highlights and whites and the Tone filter to lower the SmartTone. Then I added the Accent-AI filter and used the Advanced Contrast filter to raise the contrast even more in the highlights and midtones. Finally I used the Top & Bottom Lighting filter to darken the gravel and raised the vibrance.
