MELISANA LAKE AND CAVE
– a miracle of nature and the soul of Kefalonia one of the most beautiful Greek islands is certainly Kefalonia. This ion beauty’s late entry into the tourist scene, and thus avoided the pitfalls of industrial tourism. The island is very attractive for those who are adventurous and looking for natural beauty from which it only recognized the island as it is located on Cephalonia Myrtos beach which is 12 times declared the most beautiful beaches of Greece. However, in addition to the beautiful turquoise MYRTOS and many exotic beaches, the most visited tourist attraction is the unique Melisani caves. A well-kept secret of the locals, surrounded by forests and mountain ranges hides a lake of the same name for which is one of the natural wonders of the world. The cave is more than a million years, and was discovered only in 1951, and tourists were given access to the lake only in 1963. When you reach the caves, visitors descend the stairs to the underground lake where they wait for boats which slowly circling on the water it really provides an amazing experience. Melisani cave is about 500m away from the coast, with a maximum length of 150m, a width of 60m. The maximum depth of the lake is about 39m, the water level is a meter higher than the sea level, the lake occupies about one-third the length of the cave.
