Making Circles – 12

Laurie, as she had threatened, warned, and promised, left town.

She had turned eighteen two weeks ago, and I knew she was just waiting for her parents to say or do something she could use as the reason why she was leaving home.

Now, she had left, and Shaun, silly Shaun who was in love with her confronts me, and asks me why I didn’t tell him.

“I could have told you the day you met her that this would happen, because Laurie and I go back years. From our first conversation in Junior High she told me that as soon as she is eighteen she is going to leave home unless her parents change.  Well they didn’t.”

“You are so calm about it…”

“No, not really.  But, I did expect it.”

“Do you know where she’s going?”  he asked anxiously.

“Not yet…she’ll call, but will probably make me promise not to tell anyone.”  And I looked into that beloved face, wishing, for one second, that he would look at me with more than intellectual interest.

But of course, he didn’t and looked away.
