Louvre on the eve of the German invasion of France. Evacuation of art began before the official declaration of war, and all works are withdrawn by 3 September 1939. Recent work that has been evacuated, an antique statue of Winged Victory of Samothrace.

  1. An interesting photo. I recently visited Berlin and went to the Charlottenburg Palace, which suffered severe bomb damage during World War II at the hands of fellow-countrymen. Fortunately, most of the treasures of the Palace had been removed to places of safety before the War began, which preserved them not only from bomb damage but also from looting by Russian invaders at the end of the War.

    With the damaged parts rebuilt after the War, and the treasures restored, you can now see the rooms in their original state.
