Knowledge Acquired verses Knowledge Earned

We live in the information age, blessed with an abundance of knowledge. Our world is filled with mountains of books and an ever streaming endless vault of information in the form of the internet.

With such a vast sea of knowledge at our fingertips it is easy to get swept away in a mindset of thinking that reading alone provides all the information that we need. Not everything that is learned is contained in books and questing for knowledge is a challenge, the journey itself should be engaging.

We must not ever lose site of the value of first hand experience. Having knowledge is not just amass of a lot of facts. Knowledge is experience; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject.

Memorizing and reading is certainly important, however, knowledge from experience is equally important.

It is much better to earn what you know through practical application then to acquire second hand knowledge, but to have the mixture of both is having the best of both worlds.

So the next time you are reading about sky diving or treasure hunting, don’t be afraid to question, investigate and take that adventure. After all, we aren’t robots and knowledge is ours for the taking.

“The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge.”    ―    Daniel J. Boorstin

  1. I moved of your statement that knowledge is experience. You’re absolutely correct for experience is very effective in one’s life. It’s an applied knowledge, just like intelligence.
