I think in my life I have had more glittering zirconium than diamonds. In fact in this crazy world today I would be afraid to go out dripping with glittering diamonds. One could lose one’s life easier that way. The purpose of this post is to inform you of the largest diamond in the world. This diamond weighs in at 1.33 pounds. This 3,106-carat diamond was discovered at the Premier Mine in Pretoria, South Africa on January 25, 1905. It was given the name “Cullinan”.
Frederick Wells was digging some 18 feet below the surface of the earth when he noticed some kind of flashing light in the wall just above him. Taking a closer look and digging it out the diamond was found. Wells gave it to the owner of the mine Sir Thomas Cullinan who sold it to the Transvaal provincial government. Later on, the diamond was presented to Britain’s King Edward VII as a birthday present. Since it presented a problem for this very valuable diamond to be sent from Africa to London, England King Edward decided to have a phony diamond put aboard a steamer ship guarded by detectives as a diversion. Meanwhile, the real diamond was put in a plain box and sent on its way to England.
Once “Cullinan” reached its destination King Edward gave it to Joseph Asscher the owner of the Asscher Diamond Company in Amsterdam, The Netherlands for cutting. The precious stone was studied for six months before the cutting began. This very large diamond was cut into nine large stones and around 100 smaller ones.
The largest of these cut gems is known as “Star of Africa” or “Cullinan I” at 530 carats and is the largest-cut-fine-quality colorless diamond in the world. The second largest is “Star of Africa II” at 317 carats. If you would like to see these two beauties you have to go to visit the Tower Of London where they can be found along with other crown jewels. The first diamond has been mounted into the British Sovereign’s Royal Scepter and the second in the Imperial State Crown.
I think that someone had the right idea when they came up with the song “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend”. I have included the version sung by Marilyn Monroe.
