Catching Karma – 23

Steffie’s voice faded into a dull hum, as Marie sat in her office, remembering.

Married for thirty years, grown children and grand children and her husband, Charlie had left.

No note, no warning. She just returned from work, and he was gone, taking the things he wore, documents, his treasures.

He hadn’t left a note.

For the months preceding his absence he had shown his dissatisfaction. He’d sold his business, he’d taken his retirement pension and said he wanted to travel. She couldn’t just leave her job, her life, so he did.

Charley had walked out, leaving her in a stupor and it wasn’t until the following day when her phone rang and it was her assistant, asking where she was that she said; “Charlie left me.”

Marie was a near catatonic mess, and tried to pull the threads of herself together.

It wasn’t easy.

It had taken her three months to get to fully functional. Three months of crying, wondering, until finally getting to a divorce lawyer.
