Port Townsend Boatyard
The boatyard in Port Townsend, Washington has a tradition of building, maintaining, repairing, and restoring wooden boats. The boatyard’s history with wooden boats is a big part of the town’s identity. All kinds of boats come here from small recreational crafts to rough and ready commercial fishing vessels. You never know what may show up or what kind of boats you’ll come across.
This one has just arrived and it looks like some kind of a boat rescue or salvage. Someone had spray painted “PLEASE SAVE ME” on the hull which makes me think it was sitting somewhere mired in muck for some time. I assume someone has stepped up to the plate to save her. It was probably made to be a fishing boat. I’m planning to keep my eye on this one and I hope to be able to post a picture of it restored and painted. It is a real beauty in waiting. At that time, I will link this post for the before and after pictures.
I did after camera work on this photo. I increased the contrast to bring out the spray painted message and help it be more readable. More ‘Boats Out of Water’ are coming so keep a good watch.
How wonderful to save these boats, they deserve to be saved after all the work they have done for us.
Sadly this one was dismantled. The boatyard here is all about restoring, repairing, and rebuilding older wooden boats. This boat caused a lot of bad feelings for some. It was a cool tugboat.
Here is an article about the boat and the controversy – https://www.ptleader.com/stories/time-is-up-for-historic-tugboat-set-to-be-demolished,63071?
I think it is a beautiful boat and it deserves to be saved.
Me too. But a few days after this picture there was an article in the local paper about it. It was dismantled and some people were very upset. Some people restore boats here. It is their life’s work. They are non too happy.
Sadly they were too late to save it – some tried. – https://www.ptleader.com/stories/time-is-up-for-historic-tugboat-set-to-be-demolished,63071?
This is another beauty. I hope it gets saved.
Sadly it didn’t get saved – it was too late. Some guy did offer to buy it but that did not happen. Now it is gone forever.
That’s a real shame.
It took a while for me to hunt this down. An article in the local paper about it – https://www.ptleader.com/stories/time-is-up-for-historic-tugboat-set-to-be-demolished,63071?
That’s a sad story! Too bad they ran out of funds.
I also hope the boat will be saved. A great photo.
Unfortunately it was here for dismantling. And, that caused a big stink here with many people. There was even an article in the paper. Some people are really mad.
Oh well. Sad.
There is nothing sadder than a decaying boat on blocks. I do hope someone is saving this old beauty!!!!
It made it to the boatyard so I believe it is being saved. Somebody trucked it in. That spray painted message made me imagine a listing boat sinking in the muck at low tide. There are people here who feel that same way intensely. When I’m down there they know I don’t belong or they would know me.
I will follow it. It may be several months but I will get a picture of it looking proud. They do it to make the boats proud again I think.
All i need is the wind at my back, sails in front of me and a clear sky to navigate by. Then I will be happy!
