Something easy for us to do without going too far is to go and watch the planes at Auckland airport, and often watch the birds as well.
You aren’t allowed to feed the birds, but they pinch food from the rubbish bin. However, I caught this Pied Shag flying over head in the thumbnail shown..
We went yesterday to Auckland Airport, Auckland International airport is next to the Domestic airport.

I forgot to add that I used Pixelmator to make the Red parts of the plane more vivid.
