Many people are very conscious about the opinions of other people. They are conscious to an extent that even their decisions are influenced by how it will be perceived by others. It’s not possible to make everyone happy. At times, one has to make some hard choices and decisions which might not please everyone. But the ones trying to please everyone are unable to stick to their decisions as their decisions keep fluctuating based on others’ opinions.
My spiritual master H.H. Sri Sri Ravishankar ji often tells us “Don’t be a football of other people’s opinions.” When we base our decisions on others’ opinions then we are just like a television set whose remote control is in someone’s hands. Just like someone changes the channel and television obeys the command, similarly we get happy when someone praises us, we get upset when someone criticizes us, thus being a puppet in the hand of others.
Being a people-pleaser is not going to get you anywhere. Stop being a people-pleaser. Don’t be a puppet in the hand of others. It’s not wrong to listen to others’ advice and suggestions if you can make unbiased decisions and use the suggestions for making an informed decision.
