Jamey felt he was serving a life sentence. His life was a prison. But where would he escape to? His whole world was here.
He’d never traveled, never thought of any thing beyond being here, seeing his friends and family, going on to live in the house, having Carol as his wife.
If he got into his car and drove all night… where would he be? And do what?
He envied Denny her free spirited life and thought of the words she had said about ten years from now…
He remembered when he entered first grade and saw the sixth graders acting as monitors and wanted to be one. His mother said,
“You have to go through all the grades until you reach sixth before you can monitor.”
He supposed he’d have to go through all the stages before he could be free.
