Paul didn’t know that the premises which he now managed, had been taken on bankruptcy by the bank which leased it to the government. The government needed a place to house those on welfare.
It was the kind of place that no one who knew anything about the situation would take.
Paul, unaware of ‘back stories’, unable to question why he, the newest member of staff, was offered the position, believing, in his ‘Smart Man’ world view that he was selected based on ability.
He took the post as if being made the manager was deserved.
It was the kind of mistake he had often made which had provoked his father to call him, “Smart Man”. Of course, he had never investigated why his father used the term, never examined his actions which provoked the term.
