Paul’s father, would sneer;
“Oh, you’re a Smart Man..”
when Paul did something stupid, or uttered an excuse or explanation for an action.
Dad would stand there, looking down on Paul, then, give him a beating.
When Paul thought of those beatings, he didn’t remember what he did or said, or why, just the beating.
And hated his father.
Paul was just over two years old when he was sent to live with Grandma. He barely recalled his parents and nothing good was ever said about them, so he developed a mindless dislike and fear.
His mother came for him when he was almost five, but Grandma wouldn’t give him up.
His Father came for him when he was seven, and took him, ignoring Grandma.
