Joseph Holzberger, 19, who is currently a Port Huron Police Cadet was at the right place at the right time last Thursday evening in Port Huron Michigan before a fireworks show was to take place.

Two young girls who are aged nine and 13 years of age were swimming in the Saint Clair River were taken away by the current and away from the sandbar into a possible tragic ending by drowning since they could not swim due to the powerful currents of the river that was taking them away from the sandbar.

Holzeberger who was working on a firework detail on Thursday evening, heard the cries of help of the two girls who were being taken away from the shore.

Holzberger told another police cadet that he was going to swim in the Saint Clair River in an attempt to rescue the two girls who were having a devil of a time trying to stay afloat, Holzberger then took off his electronic radio from his uniform to avoid getting a severe shock as he would enter the river to rescue the two girls.

The two girls were traveling south on the river when Holzberger managed to grab both girls and take them to safety.

What made this story bittersweet was that the parents were not supervising their children at the time that they were taken away from the sandbar which will get their parents in hot water with the Child Protective Services in Michigan after the parents reunited with their children.

The authorities have issued warnings that no one should be swimming in the Saint Clair River without any adult supervision or wearing safety jackets.

The case is being investigated by the Michigan Child Protective Services to see if the parents will face any punishment for not keeping a sharp watch on their children when they went to the sandbar.

Cadet Officer Holzberger is being called a hero by his superiors at the poiice academy for his actions to save two lives who would have drowned in the Saint Clair River had he not rescued them.

Cadet Officer Holzberger has taken his hero accolades in stride since he was just doing his duty. Cadet Officer Holzberger has the potential of being one of the best police officers in Port Huron once he is sworn in a few years.
