New Zealand Housing Crisis

Once when other countries had Housing problems and people living off the streets, New Zealand escaped that problem. We had enough to get everyone jobs and a roof over our heads.

So when I went to London in 1981, I got a real shock to see men, my father’s age living in Hyde Park London with bottles of booze. A sad situation.

I came home to New Zealand and homelessness was beginning.

Now this is a home I drew in pen & ink for Graphic design in 1987. Everything was hand done then.

An election is coming up and the present Government is in denial that they did not help those who are homeless. The next main party promises everything to solve it, but the new Prime Minister would begin as leader of NZ at 37 years of age. She had ideas.

I’m no politician but homelessness is real in New Zealand.

What often happened is a property auction for selling homes in Auckland would be held. The foreign Chinese buyer who is richer than most New Zealanders would out bid everyone else. Or some other person from overseas.  The price of our homes became way too unaffordable.

So the rents went up and many became homeless as a result. In foreign countries you would have to live there to buy a house, we could not go to China or else where to buy their homes.

Hence a new Government or do people feel safe with what they know?  I like to see people achieve their dreams and although I am not completely in agreement, perhaps some one else should get a chance?

Its a democratic election and we will see what happens.
