This photo is from the way-back, and my third trip exploring and fishing in the lower depths of the Linville Gorge. The fishing in this river can be good for advanced anglers, but can leave the best of us skunked sometimes. I have seen some trophy size Rainbow Trout taken from the upper gorge areas, in the deep pools. Down the gorge, Smallmouth Bass can be caught, but cant seem to make it upriver past a particular four foot wide falls where the majority of the river comes together pouring over to take a four to six foot plunge to a large and deep pool below. Even when the fishing is slow, the scenery is always breathtaking in every direction, often causing me to have my camera in one hand, and my trout rod in the other.
I, as a fisherman, are more fortunate to see the catch and release the variant.
We have seasonal size and limit restrictions in Virginia, and N.C., and I live in an area that has always thrived and survived off of the seafood industry. I prefer the “Filet and Eat ” method.
Trout is characteristic and inhabits the upper rivers, high altitude lakes and dams that are rich in oxygen. Very often my sons went fishing in the mountains above the town of Kresna in Bulgaria.
Here’s a tasty recipe:
Trout with cream in oven
Products:
for 4 servings
4 trout fillets
150 ml. cream
2 tablespoons dill
2 tablespoons rosemary
salt
pepper
Recipe:
The trout fillets (4 fillets) are seasoned with salt and pepper and placed in a pan. Sprinkle with finely chopped dill (2 tablespoons) and rosemary (2 tablespoons). Sprinkle with the cream (150 ml) and bake for about 40 minutes at 190 degrees.
Thank you! I’m writing that down now! Freshwater trout do seem bland after growing up on saltwater seafood, this sounds great! If i’m home I like to use mayonnaise (Dukes) spread on top the filet”s, sprinkled liberally with lemon pepper, this is great with saltwater Speckled trout and Grey’s as well!

Great catch and great post, Jason! Trout is one of my all-time favorites, especially fried! It sounds like you had a great time! 🙂 How many times total have you been to the gorge, and have you ever seen a bear there? I’m loving your posts. They are always so informative!
Thank you, I have to think for a minute, but I think i’ve been camping or hiking thru the Gorge around 15 times over the last 20 years. I try to go every year, but the area has become heavily used, and i have other places near there in mind for exploration for my next trip south. And No, I have Never seen a bear in the Gorge, but have near there, and most people do see them all throughout the area.

We cooked these on a flat rock by the fire, wrapped in foil, with lemon pepper, and instant mashed potatoes!
Those would be in my oven with a little lemon and dinner would be done.
