And Comes the Fourth Generation – part 62

People entered the House where Selma had been employed as Matron as if they thought it was her property. They wandered about, talking about all sorts of things. No one spoke about Selma.

She had used and abused a lot of people. Although unsaid, many came to insure she was really dead.

Odette had come, dressed in a satiny blue cocktail dress, looking like she was going to the prom. Most wore their supermarket clothes.

Odette looked stupider and more out of place than normal. Embarrassed, she hid in the kitchen.

The food was set out by others, Odette had no part of anything. If she thought she’d impress her bosses; none had arrived.

None of the Board members, the persons who were responsible for Miriam House, who had hired Selma, who paid her salary, who belonged to the church, were there.

There were old friends of Don and Joe and a few of Selma’s acquaintances.

There were no prayers, no religious leader, it was just another Sunday afternoon brunch.

Joe felt good. He’d get the property his mother left him sorted starting tomorrow. Meanwhile, he’d enjoy the House and his friends.
