And Comes the Fourth Generation – 109

Odette, the erstwhile cleaner,  had more experience of the clowns who sat on the Board and claimed to run Miriam House, than anyone.

She had gotten the job over a decade ago, when Cordelia Brown was active.    It was Miss Brown who recommended Odette to the Board after interviewing her.

At the time, Odette thought Miss Brown was in charge.

Odette came to work at 8:30 and left at 4:30.

On Mondays Odette would go through Miss Brown’s house, scrubbing and mopping, and dusting,  washing up and doing laundry, filling the hours.

On Tuesday, Odette would clean the rooms occupied by the two remaining members of the Church who lived there and do the bathrooms on the block.

There hadn’t been many tenants at the time, Miriam House was mostly empty.

Odette had gone room by room, foot by foot, because she wanted, she needed the job.
