Growing Orchids on the Coast

Saturday, July 01, 2017

Cymbidium needs lots of light, and it can grow in heat or cold.

Cattleya Group plants, such as Laelia Anceps, grow with Cymbidium. They also need lots of light, and they grow in heat or cold. Sophrontis are outdoor hybrids.

Oncidium Group, such as odontoglossum, are related, and there are many varieties and combinations.

There are over 30,000 types of orchids from all over the world, except Antarctica. Different types of orchids have different needs for its survival, which mostly have to do with where it originated. They come in different colors, and I think that they tend to have an exotic appearance. Something about orchids looks Asian, and I think they would especially make good decor for a minimalist home with modern furniture, Asian theme, and lots of light. Most orchids prefer the outdoor because they are air plants. But some can thrive indoors, with the right amount of lighting and temperature.

I added my snapshot of an orchids event, where gardeners displayed their orchids, plant accessories, and arts & crafts items for sale to interested people who love these lovely plants.
