Day 4 of Spring Garden Show 2018: Herbs and Snack

Sunday, 4.29.18

At 3 pm, I decided to get a snack. I was getting hungry, and I had finished my green grapes that I brought along in my bento box. I still had my Aloe Vera juice that I brought along, but I was not thirsty. I felt like eating something simple and small. I decide to drop by Starbucks to browse around, and the Veggie Panini looked good. As I picked it up, I noticed it was cold. I wondered to myself if there was a microwave when customers can warm up certain food items, as I looked around for one. It would taste even better warm, but it is not a big deal. So, I bought it anyway because I like Panini. While paying for it, the guy behind the counter took my name down, and he went to warm it up on a grill, and I thought cool. It felt nice and warm when I got my warmed Panini that I enjoyed savoring every bite. I tried to study the inside of the Panini so I can make a similar one at home because my Panini always comes out sloppy and messy, especially if I add tomato slices in the sandwich. Maybe I should put smaller pieces of tomato and cheese in the sandwich so that when it is pressed, it does not spill over and come out from the ends in a big mess.

The 3:30 pm seminar about Japanese Maples was cancelled.  So, the last seminar I went to was at 4 pm, which was about Culinary Herbs.

An herb is herbaceous and leafy. It grows a moderate amount, in temperate climate for spices.

Herbs planted in Orange County include basil, lavender, marjoram, oregano, rosemary, sage, savory, and thyme because these herbs grow well in OC’s hot and humid weather.

Some herbs need partial shade, such as bay laurel, chives, dill, mint, lemon herb, verbena, parsley, and tarragon.

Some herbs need cool areas, such as arugula, cilantro, and fennel.

Herbs need water and sun for healthy growth. Leaves that look like needles, very small and gray, need full sun and minimum water. They grow well in pots. But they don’t last long indoors. When planting herbs, make sure you use soil with good drainage, some mulch, water, make wide shallow hole, and placed at the right location. Herbs in pots need fertilizer.

Insects are attracted to new growth.

Wasps are beneficial insects because they will eat the poor green caterpillars.

You can store herbs in the refrigerator or on the counter.

Preserve by microwave: first rinse herbs, before removing stem and placing on paper towel. Then, place into your microwave.

Preserve by freezing: first get rid of stems, before placing leaves inside airtight bag. Then, place into your freezer.
