Industrial interior design – ideas for home decoration

The industrial interior design aims to show and highlight everything that is hidden in other interior design styles. We are talking about the industrial interior style, surviving the true Renaissance in recent years and named the interior design discovery number 1 in the West. This style includes not only the lofts of artists but also luxury restaurants, Hollywood stars studios, and high fashion stores. This interior design aims to create a rough environment, which emphasizes the importance of engineering and mechanical inventions.

There is no unanimous view of why industrial style in New York, London or Amsterdam, after decades of forgetfulness, sparkled the way to prestigious salons and designer projects. Considering, perhaps, solid industrial furniture is raising a longing and returning to the times when the industry produced things that were associated with solidity, reliability and long-term use. Others argue that the popularity of the industrial style was prompted by protests of design aesthetes against making the furniture too cheap and against consumerism. Anyway, the industrial style is flourishing and the most beautiful interiors of this style make us admire the unevenness of non-traditional materials.

The key features of the industrial design style of the interior:
  • Contrary to other interior styles in the industrial interior, it is necessary to highlight communication tools – uncovered beams, wires, pipes, ventilation, ducts, channels, etc.
  • Wood and metal interaction. Wooden and metal surfaces are often used in this style. Glossy metal is very popular in the industrial interior. Often, steel or chrome accents, luminaries are chosen.
  • Colors. Usually warm, neutral colors are used, which increases the space and keeps it open. Warm shades help to counterbalance the cold-forming metal pipes and ducts. Frequently are used gray combinations.
  • Ceilings. The focus is on emphasizing the characteristic ceiling. Ceilings are an exceptional feature of this style.
  • Walls. Most often are used brick or concrete walls. On the walls can hang large artwork.
  • Floors. To maintain an industrial impression, most commons are used polished concrete flooring. This is a practical and economical option. Wood or stone can also be used for flooring.
  • Lighting. Used standing lamps and hanging luminaries. There are suitable ceiling lights on rails or cables and directional lights.
  • Decorations. Soft couches, scattered cushions, and mats outweigh the cold industrial elements. Plants also soothe the coldness of the industrial interior. Another way of drawing into the interior of this style the magical atmosphere is artworks. These can be graphic works, photographs, antique posters, large-format paintings. Hang one piece if its size is big enough to be the accent of the room. However, in the case of smaller-format works, they may be blended with promotional letters, various ornaments and other accessories suitable for hanging on the wall. It is important that it makes sense to you and effectively shows itself in the space.
  • Finishing is not given much attention. Finishing is often the choice of concrete, which is an ergonomic choice for obtaining an industrial effect. Concrete can be polished to gloss or mat. Concrete is very versatile and can be used for flooring, tabletops, sinks, baths, fireplace, etc.
  • Furniture, other items – can be of any interior design style – from Rococo to Italian interior design. The furniture is very often a wood and metal union. Frequently is used vintage furniture. At first glance, industrial-style furniture may seem like coming from an old factory or closed post office archive. But do not be fooled – it’s not old spam.
  • The incompleteness – the interior is designed to create a feeling of incompleteness. In order to create an industrial interior, it is most important to create an illusion of rough surfaces and materials that would point to the industrial past. The most simple way to achieve the impression of incompleteness is to leave some of the walls or surfaces unprocessed, incomplete.
