Mom’s Famous Chocolate Pudding Recipe

When I was growing up, like most children, I loved chocolate. My mother quickly tired of making me chocolate pudding, though, so she taught me how to make it when I was six. Her recipe was so simple that I committed it to memory. What made it especially good was that we had access to real whole milk, so I made the pudding with the cream. With the price of cream at the store now, though, I normally make this with half and half now. It can also be made with milk and there is no reason it wouldn’t even work with skimmed milk.

Cream still makes the richest variety, so I still prefer using that. Also, note that the recipe calls for butter. That means butter, not margarine. Margarine isn’t as healthy and the flavor isn’t as good. If that is all you have, though, go ahead and use margarine.

Chocolate pudding ingredients:

  • 1 quart milk, half and half or cream
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened powdered baking cocoa
  • 4 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 teaspoons real vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Chocolate pudding instructions:

1. Put the sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch, and salt in a pot, then add the milk slowly, while stirring.

2. Heat at medium, stirring constantly, until the pudding comes to a full, rolling boil.

3. Remove from the heat and immediately stir in the butter and vanilla, mixing it up well. Allow it to cool to room temperature, then refrigerate the chocolate pudding.

As it sits and cools, a ‘skin’ will usually form over the pudding. I especially like the skin, but some people don’t. If you don’t want the skin to form, stir the pudding well after the skin first starts to form.

As a special treat, try putting a few ripe, fresh, juicy strawberries in the bottom of a bowl and pour the pudding over the top. This can even be done prior to refrigerating, for individual servings.

I still remember making this pudding morning after morning when I was very young. I never did get tired of it. The only requirement placed upon me by my mother was that I had to clean up my own mess. Since this doesn’t make much of a mess, it seemed like an excellent deal to me. I didn’t know at the time that I was also learning responsibility while I was learning to make this special treat.

    • I really do, too. Last time I made some, I made a double batch and almost didn’t get to have any. Everyone else in the household ate it before I had the chance. LOL

  1. That looks delicious! I wonder if it would be possible to make it low carb 🙂 Using cream instead of milk and sugar substitute instead of regular sugar…oh and maybe something else for the cornstarch. If not I’ll make this for a cheat day. Thanks for sharing the recipe!
