How to Make Dry Italian Salad Dressing Mix

I love Italian salad dressing, but I sure don’t love the price of it in the store. Even the dry mixes like Good Seasons are too expensive for what they are. So being the frugal, do it yourselfer that I am, I made my own. I think it tastes quite a bit like Wishbone.

Dry Ingredients:

  • 3/4 teaspoon lemon pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon parsley
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (omit if you don’t like spicy)
  • 1/8 teaspoon oregano
  • 1/8 teaspoon basil

These are the ingredients for the dry portion of the recipe. The rest of it is how you make the dry mix into Italian salad dressing:

Wet Ingredients:

  • 1/8 cup of finely grated bell pepper (can be added to the dry mix if you have some dried or dehydrated peppers)
  • 1/8 cup of finely grated carrot (ditto above only with carrots)
  • 1/4 cup cider vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons of water
  • 1/2 cup of olive oil

Directions:

  1. In a bottle or jar, pour vinegar, water and all the dressing mix.
  2. Shake to mix.
  3. Add olive oil and shake hard for 2 minutes.
  4. Refrigerate for two hours before serving to give the flavors time to mix.
  5. Shake before using.

This mix makes a great jar gift to give for the holidays, to new homeowners, or to anyone that likes Italian salad dressing! It’s convenient to have around, not only to make salad dressing, but you can also use it for a meat rub, or seasoning for soups and stews. It is a very versatile blend!

  1. I’ve been looking for such a mix. I normally use Good Seasons, but I do think it’s over-priced. I’d rather make more than one batch at a time. I don’t like anything with pepper of any kind, so I’d have to modify it. It appears it takes about 5 t. dry mix should go with the oil water, and vinegar per batch. Does that sound right?
