Flax: The Most Useful Plant

Flax seeds have been consumed as food for thousands of years. The Latin name of flax is Linum usitatissimum, where the term “usitatissimum” means “most useful”.

Flax seed oil is used as a nutritional supplement and as an ingredient in many wood-finishing products, while its fibers are used to make linen. There are two basic varieties of flax seeds: brown and yellow or golden. Both of them have similar nutritional characteristics.

Why eat flax seeds

Flax seeds are rich in protein, dietary fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. What’s more, flaxseeds are one of the few foods that have a perfect Omega-3s to Omega-6s ratio.

They can be beneficial for your digestion, hormonal balance, cholesterol level, mental health, skin and hair. Read more on my blog.

How to eat flaxseed

The seeds can remain undigested, so you can either consume flaxseed oil or flaxseed meal. Add flax oil to salads, or on bread and sandwiches, but don’t heat it. Put ground flaxseed in smoothies or eat it with meals that have a higher glycemic index like pasta, rice, etc.

Other uses

Did you know that you can use flax as an egg substitute in vegan and plant-based baking recipes?

The easiest way to make flaxseed egg replacer is to mix some ground flax seeds with a little water. You can either grind your flax seeds at home or use store-bought flaxseed meal. You can see the full recipe here.

  1. Great recipe. I am a vegan, so I sometimes use flax seeds as an egg replacer in baking. It is not only nutritious, but gives the finished product a lovely nutty flavour.

  2. A friend of mine told me she lost weight just by eating milled flax seeds mixed with honey – one teaspoon every morning or with butter and bread, but instead marmalade she would put that mixture of honey and milled flax seeds.

    • Sounds great, especially the idea of eating it instead of marmalade! Thank you for sharing! I usually put it in yogurt (I mix milled and whole seeds).

  3. hm wow, so now i ask my self.. – how did i MISS flax??? im always looking for food with protein as im like on a diet.. allllllllways.. <going to the store now 😀 Thank you for the great info 😀 <3

    • I’m happy to hear that the article was useful! 🙂 However, even though flax has a lot of protein, the doses that we eat are not that big (1 or 2 tablespoons) so I’m not sure whether it will be very helpful for that matter.
