I am sure that you have heard of the slogan “Going the extra mile.” In the case of Dalton Shaffer who is a manager of a mom and pop pizza parlor named “Steve’s Pizza” which is located in Battle Creek Michigan impressed Rich Morgan and his wife Julie while they lived in Battle Creek Michigan for a period of two years.

Fate played a cruel hand on Rich who is in hospice after he received the bad news that he has salivary gland cancer which could take his live in a matter of weeks.

Julie wanted to celebrate her 56th birthday in Battle Creek Michigan with her husband Rich when he was diagnosed with the deadly disease by the medical staff in their local hospital.

David Dalke who is the father of Julie wanted to contact Steve’s Pizza so the pizza store would send a get well card for Rich so can feel better.

The manager of the store Dalton Shaffer decided to take the extra mile to try to cheer up the Morgan family by telling them that he would be willing to travel from Battle Creek to Indianapolis Indiana who would be a round trip 700 miles to deliver two 16″ inch pizzas to the Morgan family as a special favor for them.

Dalton then told the Morgan family that he would drive his auto from Battle Creek to Indianapolis to deliver their pizzas even though driving around 350 miles from and to Indianapolis would require the stamina of a long distance runner.

As soon as Dalton closed the store in Battle Creek at around 2:30 am, he drove the long distance to Indianapolis to personally deliver the pizzas to the Morgan family free of charge.

Dalton was offered money to stay overnight at a local hotel as repayment for his great service. Dalton refused to accept the hotel offer since he to return to work later that day.

Dalton told the Morgan family that Rich would be in his prayers for a speedy recovery before he drove back from Indianapolis to Battle Creek safe and sound.

Steve’s Pizza is one the few stores that does not offer delivery services in Michigan. In my view, most mom and pop pizza parlors make the best pizzas in the world.

I will never forget the time my relatives and myself traveled to Montreal to attend the 1976 Summer Olympic Games on our last North American vacation before we moved from Panama to Louisiana in 1978.

There was a pizza parlor named “Esplanade” that made one of the greatest tasting pizzas of all time in Montreal.

Three cheers for Dalton Shaffer for doing his very best to serve a customer who wanted to have what could be his last pizza meal from Steve’s Pizza.
