Alabama sausage among specialties at new Montgomery restaurant

Wanting to bring historical Southern flavor with a new twist to downtown Montgomery, a brother and sister took the big step of opening their own restaurant.

Cahawa House not only serves delicious cuisine, it also tells you the farm from which the ingredients were obtained. Curious? Just look at a handwritten list on a restaurant hallway blackboard detailing some of the farms.

As for that name, owners Tim and Tara Essary chose to name their restaurant after the first official state capital of Alabama. Cahawba House opened in October 2016.

One of my menu favorites is Alabama’s famous Conecuh Sausage made in the county of the same name. “Conecuh” is a Creek Indian word for “Land of Sugar Cane.” The sausage makes a yummy combo with homemade fluffy biscuits at Cahawba House.

Add to that a tray with four jams and jellies. Cahawba House also notes on its menu where those sweets came from – strawberry jam and bramble jam from Handey’s Farm, peach jam and blackberry jam from Hornsby Farms, apple butter from Cahawba House and honey from Urban Hives.

Other popular breakfast items are fresh-baked beignets and cheese grits. I’m not a coffee connoisseur but others who are said the Cahawba coffee is smooth and rich.

Cahawba House serves breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
