The SS Edmund Fitzgerald was an American Great Lakes freighter, the largest of her kind that sank in a violent November storm on Lake Superior in1975. She went down with the loss of the entire crew of 29. When launched on June 7, 1958, she was the largest ship on North America’s Great Lakes, and she remains the largest to ever have sunk there.
Gordon Lightfoot’s haunting lyrics tell the story of her last voyage to the bottom of the lake…
Fellas its been good to know ya!
The song is one of the guaranteed sing-alongs in my car!!!!
The sad reality of the song is the reality of the ship. As the song says “she’d a made whitefish bay if they put 15 more miles behind her.”
They sank in the darkness unable to see land but very close.
Such a tragedy and such talent to create this song.
I’m just looking at the clip you posted so I hurried a little.
Thank you , maybe you could publish the verses you mention!
I had to memorize this in high school. I do not think I could recite it all now.
Hello Ghostwriter, hopefully you wont have to recite it again. It was so tragic, I used to
listen to Gordon Lightfoot’s songs in the 70’s and never listened to these beautiful lyrics before.
