No, I am not referring to a bird. I am referring to a woman who was known as “The Swedish Nightingale”. Her name was Jenny Lind and she was known for her beautiful voice in the U.S. and in Europe. She made her American debut at the Castle Garden Theater in New York City on September 11, 1850.
She was born Johanna Maria Lind on October 6, 1820, in Stockholm, Sweden. Jenny Lind began singing in her first opera at the age of 17. Soon she had many followers including Queen Victoria of England. By the time she took the stage in America she had changed from opera singer to recitalist and sang many popular songs of that time.
She became so popular that new dances were choreographed and named after her. There were people enjoying dancing to the “Jenny Lind Polka” or the “Jenny Lind’s Set of Waltz Quadrilles”.
