This is a highly significant once-off project initiated by the executive secretary and director of publications of Fellowship of Reconciliation and Rev. Glenn E. Smiley, a civil rights consultant and leader. The group managed to acquire grant funding of $5000 for the project from the Fund for the Republic. Apparently, Dr.King himself endorsed the comic and even provided a few editorial suggestions.
